French Art Deco Tubular Steel Side Table, c. 1930s

French Art Deco Tubular Steel Side Table, c. 1930s
DETAILS
A rare and highly architectural French side table dating from the early Art Deco period. The design shows a richly figured dark wood body with a continuous tubular steel support, creating a striking balance between traditional craftsmanship and the machine-age aesthetic that defined the transition from Art Deco to early Modernism.
The circular top is supported by a sculptural curved wood pedestal, softened by rounded corners and complemented by a single bent tubular steel leg. The use of tubular steel reflects the influence of Bauhaus and modern industrial design, while the warm wood tones retain the elegance associated with French Art Deco furniture of the period. This combination of geometric volume, curved forms and industrial materials is characteristic of the progressive furniture produced in France during the 1930s.
