DETAILS
An important pair of Amsterdam School armchairs executed in solid walnut, dating from the interwar period. While the maker remains unknown, the design embodies the characteristics that define the Amsterdam School movement: a sculptural approach to furniture design that blurred the boundary between furniture and architecture.

The chairs are constructed from substantial walnut elements, featuring vertical slatted side panels, broad armrests and deeply recessed structural frames. Their powerful cubic silhouette reflects the influence of architects and designers associated with the movement, including Michel de Klerk, Piet Kramer and Genneper Molen, whose work often explored similar relationships between mass, geometry and handcrafted detail.

Particularly noteworthy are the distinctive ball feet, a recurring motif found in a number of Dutch interwar furniture designs. Combined with the carved decorative elements on the front supports, they lend the chairs a expressive quality that is characteristic of Amsterdam School design, where ornament was integrated into the architecture of the piece rather than applied superficially.

The chairs retain their original patterned upholstery, a vibrant textile typical of the late 1920s and 1930s. Its organic, almost painterly motif provides a compelling contrast to the strict geometry of the walnut frames, enhancing the distinctly Amsterdam School character of the design.
